Myrtle essential oil is distilled from an evergreen shrub known in botany as Myrtus communis, which is originally from the Mediterranean regions. The raw material is mostly leaves and stems. The extract is valued for its healing properties, which experts compare to the effects of eucalyptus oil, but myrtle is much milder...which does not mean less effective.
Myrtle is useful during infections - it reduces congestion of the respiratory tract (mainly bronchi and lungs), counteracts the formation of mucus and accumulation of phlegm, provides relief from coughing. It effectively cleanses the air of invisible, yet harmful microorganisms and brings refreshment - not only during illness.
When used regularly, myrtle essential oil improves the appearance of the skin, and can be applied topically to imperfections or as a stand-alone skin care item that will gently tighten the epidermis and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. While it is safe, it is a concentrated formulation and care should be taken to dilute the product properly.
Myrtle is mostly used for medicinal purposes, but it also has a very interesting fragrance - it is light and fresh, you can easily detect camphor and herbaceous notes, as well as a surprising sweetness that gives the extract character. The aroma combats fatigue, anxiety and tension, adds energy and promotes well-being. Interestingly - it does not mask, but eliminates unpleasant (and usually bothersome) odors that can spoil the atmosphere in any home.
