Description

Borax is an inorganic chemical compound that occurs naturally in nature. It was discovered at the bottom of dried lakes in Tibet, from where the substance was brought to the Arabian Peninsula. It only came into widespread use at the end of the 19th century. Although it has been used for a long time, it has certainly not lost its value. Borax is a versatile product - it is effective, yet safe for humans and environmentally friendly. It can successfully replace many preparations that can be not only irritating but also toxic.

Borax - composition and properties

Borax (also known as sodium borate or sodium tetraborate) is the sodium salt of boric acid. The compound dissolves very well in water, forming an alkaline solution. It is usually found as a powder or as small, white crystals. Commonly used in industry for the production of glass and ceramics, it is useful in every household.

The properties of this remarkable substance encompass many - the product is an all-purpose cleaner and refresher, which will prove useful when cleaning. However, it does not stop there - borax also helps solve problems in and around the home - it is often used as a natural pesticide or fertiliser for garden plants.

Borax - indications and uses

Borax will come in handy when washing - it will refresh whites, soften hard water, help remove stains and deep clean clothes. All you need to do is mix half a tablespoon of borax and a glass of warm water, add it to the washing machine along with the detergent and turn on your chosen programme. The product can also be used in the dishwasher - it will clean the machine, remove unpleasant odours and make glassware shine.

Borax is often used in horticulture as a fertiliser for soil that is deficient in boron - the compound is an important element in the structural integrity of the cell walls of many plants. The product also replaces commercial pesticides used to control insects. It repels common pests (e.g. roaches) and insects (e.g. ants). Simply place a dab of borax in sensitive areas (such as cracks, pipe inlets, wall panels and other hard-to-reach spaces) of the house where pesticides are not recommended.

Borax - indications and uses

Borax is worth using when cleaning. It works effectively, yet gently. It can easily replace many preparations for different purposes. How to use borax?

  • for cleaning surfaces (1 teaspoon of borax + 2 cups of hot water + 2 tablespoons of vinegar)
  • for cleaning floor tiles (1 tablespoon of borax for every 2 litres of water)
  • for cleaning carpets (1/2 cup borax + 1/2 cup baking soda + 20 drops of your favourite essential oil - mix all together, sprinkle on carpet and vacuum after 15 minutes)
  • for cleaning windows and mirrors (1 tablespoon of borax per 300 ml of water)

Borax will remove mineral deposits and restore the shine of bathroom fittings, help clean difficult surface stains, unclog drains and eliminate unpleasant odours. The product will make it easier to get rid of mould from hard-to-reach nooks and crannies - mix half a cup of borax and 1 litre of warm water in an atomiser bottle, spray the fungus-ridden areas and leave for 30 minutes.

Borax is easy to use, economical and versatile. It solves many everyday problems in the best possible way - effectively, naturally and safely.
