Bitter Orange essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind of the ripe fruit of the Citrus aurantium tree. Prized for its fragrance and healing properties, it has been used for thousands of years in natural Chinese medicine and in many other cultures around the world. The fruit is too sour and bitter to be suitable for food, but when used to make essential oil it promotes health, wellbeing and provides a clean, fragrant home.
Bitter orange essential oil is an effective antibacterial and antiseptic, for which the main ingredient limonene is largely responsible (it accounts for up to 95%). When used in a diffuser, it cleanses the air and can protect against colds and flu, especially during times of increased sickness.
The oil is useful during massage - it stimulates skin tone and helps to get rid of cellulite. When used around the stomach and abdomen, it improves the digestive process and helps get rid of toxins. It is not uncommon for it to be included in cosmetics designed for vascular, oily and acne-prone skin - the product has a versatile effect - it strengthens, cleanses, calms and tones the skin.
